Storage & Shelf Life

Indian potatoes are typically graded by diameter (measured in mm). For 25kg bulk packaging, the following grades are standard:

Fresh Potatoes

7–15 days at room temperature.

Cold Storage

6–10 months if kept at 4°C to 7°C with high humidity (90% -95%).

Popular Indian Potato Varieties

In India, varieties are often categorized by their “Kufri” names (named after the Central Potato Research Institute in Kufri).2

Size & Grading Standards

Indian potatoes are typically graded by diameter (measured in mm). For 25kg bulk packaging, the following grades are standard:

  • Super / Oversize (> 65 mm): Premium large potatoes, often used for baking or restaurant French fries.

  • Grade A (45 mm – 65 mm): The standard "Medium" size most common in retail and export markets.

  • Grade B (35 mm – 45 mm): Smaller potatoes often used for specific regional dishes or canning.

  • Goli / Baby Potatoes (< 35 mm): Very small potatoes, popular for traditional dishes like Dum Aloo.

25kg Packaging Specifications

The 25kg weight is a standard unit for both domestic wholesale and international export.

Types of Bags

  • Leno Mesh Bags: The most common for 25kg. They are breathable (preventing rot), lightweight, and usually come in red, yellow, or purple colors to enhance the appearance of the potatoes.

  • Jute/Gunny Bags: Traditional and eco-friendly. These offer excellent protection and are preferred for long-duration storage or rough handling during transport.

  • PP (Polypropylene) Woven Bags: Used mainly for lower-cost domestic transit or when moisture protection is a higher priority than breathability.

Quality Checklist for 25kg Packs

  • Ventilation: Ensure bags are not packed so tightly that air cannot circulate.

  • Moisture: Potatoes should be "cured" (skin hardened) before packing to prevent skin peeling.

  • Sorting: A standard 25kg pack should have a maximum of 3-5% size variation and less than 2% damaged/rotten pieces.
